Satellite Operations Superintendent

Aqua America, Inc. is one of the largest investor owned water utility companies in the nation.  Aqua provides water and wastewater services to approximately 3 million people in 9 states and continues to grow its operations through acquisitions. We are presently looking for a Satellite Operations Superintendent in the Sharon, PA area.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:  

This is a hands-on management position having responsibility for the Western Pennsylvania satellite systems, including management of the Water Works Operators who operate and maintain their respective satellite systems. The Satellite Operations Superintendent is responsible for management of all aspects of operations, which includes production, transmission and distribution, customer service, maintenance, safety and the operations and capital budgets. The supervisor is accountable for the effective, efficient and safe operation of these facilities.

Responsible for the following functions:

  • The Satellite Operations Superintendent is the person in charge of all operations at the satellite systems, including, but not limited to, maintaining, repairing and day-to-day operations of source and treatment facilities.
  • The Satellite Operations Superintendent will be the Water Works Operator at one or more of the satellite operations.
  • Utilizes input and recommendations from the Water Treatment/Quality Control Group in Bryn Mawr and the Shenango Division Chemist to monitor and/or control all source/water treatment plant equipment. Collects required compliance samples. Performs operational lab sampling and testing to maintain water quality standards to optimize overall plant performance and produce high quality water at the lowest price. Resolves all source and treatment related problems. Procures chemicals and efficiently manages chemical inventory. Continuously reviews daily pumping reports for pumping and power consumption efficiency. Recommends and suggests pumping and treatment improvements at all source/treatment facilities.
  • The Satellite Operations Superintendent is the person in charge of operation and maintenance of the satellite water distribution facilities, including, but not limited to, maintaining, repairing and day-to-day operation of system piping, hydrants, valves, services, booster stations, tanks and all related facilities.
  • The Satellite Operations Superintendent is the person in charge of Customer Service within the assigned satellites, which includes, but is not limited to: utilizing input and recommendations from the Customer Service Group in Bryn Mawr and the Shenango Division Distribution Manager to develop procedures and protocols to ensure that all Customer Service goals and objectives are met; coordinates all Service Link scheduling for the other Satellite Water Works Operators; management of meter reading; responding to customer requests/complaints; performing the necessary work required to maintain customers’ meters and company service lines/curb boxes; and responding to all Service Link work orders.
  • Responsible for all satellite systems compliance monitoring and sampling, as well as compliance with all DEP operating and permit requirements.
  • Maintains satellite system records, prints, equipment manufacturer’s manuals and operating data for source/treatment plants, valves, hydrants, booster stations, valve pits and storage tanks.
  • Enters and completes all satellite system operations work orders in the company’s asset management work order program, which is currently Maintenance Connection. Also, responsible for “closing” work orders that are completed by Water Works Operators at satellite systems under his/her management. Responsible for spare parts inventory.
  • Fosters outstanding communications with satellite operations personnel and Aqua Pennsylvania management including listening, communicating expectations, providing all relevant information and feedback in a timely manner.
  • Acts as Aqua Pennsylvania’s point of contact with local satellite system communities and DEP representatives. Liaison between customers and company. Attends local government meetings. Responds to all after-hour customer inquiries.
  • Supervision of multiple satellite system operators. Assists with the hiring of effective and responsible employees. Complete supervision and on-going training of personnel at satellite systems for operation and maintenance of production, distribution and customer service areas. Resolves labor relations and other personnel problems promptly with good judgment and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Accountable for all unscheduled overtime, major repairs and immediate notification of unusual conditions.
  • Administers applicable portions of the Company Safety Program.
  • Responsible for security within the satellite systems and implements company policies and directives.
  • Manages maintenance and capital projects from cradle to grave and provides input during planning, design and permitting. Ensures facility operations are maintained during projects. Bid, contract with and supervise outside contractors for operations, maintenance and capital projects when assigned.
  • Employee shall provide the services described hereinabove on a full-time, twenty-four (24) hour per day, seven (7) days per week basis, responding to emergency repair or maintenance matters.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Regularly consults with the Shenango Division Production Manager for all responsibilities and duties described hereinabove.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL OR REGISTRATION QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience in water system operations or related field, or Associates degree plus 6-years of experience in water system operations or related field. In lieu of an Associate's degree, the selected candidate wil lbe required to obtain an Associate's Degree within 2 years. Must be capable of performing all distribution, production and customer service functions. Experience managing multiple operations is also desirable.

The Satellite Operations Superintendent must understand and apply regulatory requirements, industry standards, and financial principles to the operation of assigned utilities. Must hold a DEP Waterworks Operators license equivalent to the highest class of water system(s) supervised.

Must possess excellent communication skills and be able to interact with employees, municipal officials, contractors and customers under all conditions.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops and manages annual operating ($350,000) and capital ($950,000) budgets for assigned satellite systems. Utilizes company’s financial software (currently Lawson and Power Plant) to manage financials and procure services.

PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision of two or more employees (Water Works Operators).
