The course provides a comprehensive review of biological odor production in wastewater treatment plants and sewer systems as well as operational measures for odor prevention and control. The course reviews the forms of cBOD degradation that produce odors, the bacteria responsible for odor production, and the analytical tests that are available to monitor odor production and control. Operational measures that are reviewed for preventing and controlling odor production include biological, chemical, and physical. Examples of control measures presented include aeration, bioaugmentation, biofilters, disinfectants, nitrate addition, oxidizing agents, pH adjustment, and sulfide precipitation.
