HAMBURG MUNICIPAL AUTHORITY WASTEWATER OPERATOR JOB DESCRIPTION
BASIC FUNCTION
This hourly position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Authority’s entire wastewater treatment plant and collection system and to assist in the Hamburg Water System. This is a skilled position and the individual assigned to this position is to fulfill assignments made by the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor or Borough Manager in the absence of the Wastewater Supervisor to the best of the individual’s ability and in the best interest of the Authority.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND COLLECTION SYSTEM
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform daily lab test procedures including Dissolved Oxygen, Ph, Total & Free Chlorine Residuals, Total Suspended Solids, and all other tests required to be performed under the NPDES Permit and/or process requirements.
- Recommend necessary daily adjustments to plant and to maintain proper parameters to achieve permit limits.
- Calculate return and waste flow rates and make necessary adjustments based on calculations.
- Clean and maintain all Authority-owned sewer facilities.
- Locate laterals, collection, trunklines, and traps.
- Perform I/I investigations.
- Responsible for the operation & maintenance of sewage pump stations.
- Responsible for keeping all daily logs up to date and accurate for regulatory inspections.
- Maintains service files, plant logs, and maintenance schedules.
- Cover scheduled shifts in the wastewater system in absence of the Supervisor.
- Responsible for responding to alarm call outs and emergencies.
- GIS data logging.
- Wash down tanks and channels and remove floating debris from tanks.
- Take readings and maintain records from the plant, pumping stations and Hamburg Center.
- Open clogged laterals and sewer mains, repair “rattling” manhole covers and remove grease and grit from manhole channels.
- Maintain the facilities and site by cutting grass, cleaning tanks, painting, checking generators and other emergency equipment. Perform building and grounds maintenance tasks.
- Perform process control by wasting sludge, recirculation or sludge removal.
- Perform other related work as required by the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor or Borough Manager in the absence of the Wastewater Supervisor
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING REQUIRED
- 3+ years’ experience in the water and/or wastewater industry.
- Knowledge of the functions of all plant equipment.
- Ability to direct and interact with personnel and consultants.
- Knowledge of all maintenance of wastewater control equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret prints/data.
- Knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the wastewater industry.
- Knowledge of all federal and state regulatory requirements, including federal and state reporting requirements.
- Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs. without assistance.
- Ability to climb conventional and ship ladder stairs into limited access areas such as manholes, wet wells, and other confined space areas.
- Ability to exert pulling and pushing effort to operate manual valves with varying degrees of force.
- Ability to stand in lab for extended periods of time while performing tests.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles and other general wastewater equipment.
- Available for emergency call outs and working weekends and Holidays.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a PA DEP Wastewater Treatment Plant License B,E or higher along with subclasses 1,4.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
